Resources for installing and maintaining Microsoft Office 2007 products
Resources for installing and maintaining Microsoft Office 2007 products Resources for installing and maintaining Microsoft Office 2007 products

There are several places you can turn to for help with installing and maintaining Microsoft Office 2007. Of course, if you are having trouble with our add-ins, by all means start with our own support page.

Office Itself

Did you know that the new Office 2007 interface changes based on what item is highlighted in your document? For instance, in Word, if you click on an existing table, the commands available to you all pertain to table commands. This can be a little disconcerting at first, but after you get used to it, helps you to do more with features that you may not have done in the past because it would take too long to learn how to do it.

If you continue to have trouble, you can download Microsoft's Get Started tab. This tab gets installed into your new Office 2007 products (so it's easy to find) and can show you video demos on how the Office 2007 programs work, show you where commands that used to be in Outlook 2003 are now located, and give you access to online training so that you can improve a little bit each day.

In addition, Office help is quite advanced. You need only type in a few commands and you get a number of helpful articles (usually including step-by-step instructions) on how to complete the job you're trying to do. You can also type F1 at any point to get help related to what you are trying to do just like you've always been able to do.

Finally, Microsoft makes updates available that both fix problems in Office as they are uncovered as well as tighten security. These updates are free and can be accessed by going to Help...Check For Upgrades.

Public Communities

Did you know that there are free public newsgroups devoted to Microsoft Office products? There are several groups for each individualy office product. For instance, there are (at least) seven just for Microsoft Outlook covering installation, printing, faxing, contacts, calendar, Business Contact Manager and general questions. What makes these groups useful (besides the fact that they are free) is that these forums each have a collection of extremely smart individuals that volunteer their time to answer your questions known as MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals).

Now, you must realize that you are probably not the first person to come across a particular problem. Therefore you will want to search to see if your question has already been asked and what the answer was. So, even though we're dealing with microsoft newsgroups, the history of the groups is kept by Google and you can search through the groups here.

So if you cannot find a suitable answer to your question and you feel that you must ask your question in one of the public groups, remember that you must be patient (and kind) when asking a question because the people that answer your questions are volunteers. They are under no obligation to answer your questions. In addition, do not use your real email address on any of these groups, as spammers will grab your email address. You can sign up with a fake email address and read and post questions at both Google groups and Microsoft groups (they are two different places to access same set of conversations). Remember to be patient, it generally takes a few hours to receive a response.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles

Microsoft makes available an extensive search database of articles that it has published that explain issues in Microsoft Office (and other Microsoft products) and (usually) how to fix the problem. These articles are published from time to time but not on any particular schedule. You can search all the Microsoft Knowledge base articles or you can sign up to receive alerts when new articles (relevant to you) are published.

Microsoft Events and Training

If you have a general need for training (which could help to alleviate specific problems later) you might want to try the free webcasts and live events that Microsoft makes available.

Get In Touch With Microsoft Support

Microsoft employs over 25,000 employees. Some of them are devoted to helping you get up and running with Office 2007.

One of the best ways for self-help if you have a problem with a specific product is to go to Microsoft's Office Hub. You simply choose the product you're having trouble with (like, Word, Excel, Outlook, etc) then you can view the top issues associated with that product, frequent error messages and how to resolve them, installation and setup issues, etc. In our opinion, this is potentially the least used but best organized support page offered by Microsoft.

Need more help? Microsoft offers 90 days of free call in, chat, or email support - and it begins the first day you call, chat or email. If you have a specific problem and you need a quicker response than the solutions offered above, you can contact Microsoft support directly. Simply choose your product, then follow the on screen instructions.

After your 90 days of free support is over, you can still opt to pay for Microsoft support (from the same link) on a per incidient basis.

Custom Third Party Support

If you have exhausted all the other resources and you still have a problem, or if your problem is not directly related to your Microsoft products, you can reach out to a third party support team. These teams can access your computer over the internet or send someone to your physical location to help you resolve your particular issue quickly. We recommend PlumChoice for this service. It has been recommended by our customers and while we don't use them ourselves, it is our understanding that they offer a quick and professional service.
